 仔猪存活率腹泻，甚至存活率不高，可能跟母猪有莫大的关系。因此对仔猪活命至关重要的母源抗体和免疫活性细胞，不会经胎盘传递，仔猪必须从初乳中获取。而如果母猪的初乳不健康或被污染的话，将会严重影响猪仔。
随着养殖经验的积累，人们对仔猪病原性腹泻有了较多认识，通过疫苗免疫和药物治疗多能解决，但对母源性腹泻还没有充分重视。
母源性腹泻原因可分为：
1.奶水中母源抗体不足，新生仔猪得不到母源免疫力保护，易出现病原性腹泻
对仔猪活命至关重要的母源抗体和免疫活性细胞，因为不会经胎盘传递，仔猪必须从初乳中获取，初生仔猪的肠壁具有独特的胞饮作用，可直接吸收和利用初乳中的抗体及免疫活性细胞，这种特殊的吸收方式仅存在于出生后大约6小时内，所以出生后6小时内必须让仔猪吃上初乳以抵抗早期感染，防止下痢等疾病。而奶水中的抗体多是蛋白，若产前母猪营养不能满足需求，体内免疫因子合成必然受影响。所以产前一个月母猪的氨基酸补充尤为重要。
2.母猪奶水量不足，导致仔猪吃不饱，抵抗力下降，易于感染疾病，导致腹泻甚至死亡
母猪产后无奶或奶水少的现象并不少见，但主要原因可归为怀孕后期营养不够，乳腺未能充分发育；营养不均衡，能量过高，造成肥胖和内分泌失调；年老体弱不能对饲料有效吸收利用；有疾病感染。
3.奶水的有效营养含量不足而导致的营养性腹泻
而母猪哺乳期采食量低，或摄入的营养不全面，不能满足仔猪生长需要，则会动用自身脂肪造乳，而这样的奶水中并没有足够营养，但脂肪过量，从而引起营养性腹泻。
4. 奶水中致病因子会导致仔猪非病原性腹泻
如今的母猪，大多携带蓝耳、附红细胞体等多种病原，只是处在一个平衡状态。当转入产房，缺水、炎热、惊吓、分娩等多种因素应激时，体内这种平衡受到冲击，从自身抵抗力与致病因子间的对抗到重新建立平衡，导致母猪体内有较多的炎性产物，从而奶水中出现了较多的炎性因子，仔猪吮吸乳汁后导致炎性产物中毒，造成哺乳仔猪腹泻。若炎性因子持续存在，则会导致仔猪吃奶后病情严重的现象，最终无药可治而死亡。如果给母猪输液清除体内有害物质，即便治疗及时，仔猪也会受到严重影响，往往终生生长发育缓慢。
总之，减少母猪奶水炎性因子，要从良好的营养、正确的管理入手。如产前一个月饲料中添加优质蛋白、可提高免疫力的产品或能调节新陈代谢的产品，减少母猪应激，从而达到母猪健康，仔猪平安。
